The Kerala Board of Public Examinations was established in the year 1965, to regulate and supervise. The system of intermediate and higher education in the state of Kerala and to specify the courses of study and matters connected there with the students. It is mandated to “Reach the unreached” in terms of education and skill, in Kerala through private and regular mode, in the state with special focus on marginalised socio-economic and religious sections. As a government body, in the field of school education, it develops its own content and books, imparts education to all, corresponding to all levels of a formal school system, I.E. From Class I to Class XII. It also holds public examinations, followed by grand of certificates for both Class X and Class XII.

Kerala Board of Public Examinations functions as a “Department of General Education” of Government of Kerala Part of the State Department of Education and it holds the Authority to conduct two of the major secondary school examinations namely:

  1. Class XII Stateboard
  2. Class X Stateboard

Kerala Board of Higher Secondary Education is the Board which conducts the examination of both class X and XII. The Board is established to conduct the examination and also to nourish the academic career of the students in the state.

The main objective of Kerala Board of Public Examinations is to impart best quality higher education to the eligible students of the State who complete their SSLC/equivalent level education. In order to achieve this particular objective, the department conducts courses in subjects of Science, Humanities and Commerce streams in the Higher Secondary Schools and imparts timely training to teachers.

Board Pattern is as follows:

  • SSLC: Secondary School Leaving Certificate Examination
  • HCLC: Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate Examination

Schools offer both English and Malayalam as a language of instruction.

Board Divisions

For administrative convenience and improving the efficiency in school education, district offices are functioning in the 14 revenue districts of the state headed by Deputy Directors of Education. Each revenue district has been divided into Educational Districts and further into Educational Sub-Districts.

  1. There are 36 Educational Districts and
  2. 161 Educational Sub-Districts in the State

Each of the District Educational Office is headed by District Educational Officer (DEO) and each Educational Sub-District office is headed by the Assistant Educational Officer (AEO). The DEO attends the administration of High Schools, Training Schools along with other special types of schools in the Educational District. The AEO is primarily responsible for the administration of all the primary schools within the Sub-District. Some of the regions under the Board Kasargod, Kannur, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Malappuram, Palakkad, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Idukki, Kottayam, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram.

Board Organisation

The Director of Public Instruction is the Head of the Department, who is also the Commissioner for Government Examinations in the state. He is assisted by Additional Directors, Joint Directors, and Senior Administrative Officer, Senior Finance Officer, la Officer, Deputy Secretary, Accounts Officers, Deputy Directors, Assistant Directors along with the other staff in the headquarters. The Joint Commissioner, the Secretary and the Assistant Secretary and other staff, located in the Pareekshabhaven, assist him in various Government Examinations conducted by the Department.

Fee Concession

  1. SC/ST/OEC Kudumbies and Christian convert from SC/ST/OEC who are bonafide subjects of the Kerala State. They are eligible for full fee concession and a stipend. They will have to produce at the time of admission a certificate of nativity and certificate of a community if a community has not been specified in the SSLC.
  2. Applicants belonging to the backward communities who are bonafide subjects of Kerala are eligible for full fee concession, provided the annual income of both their parents or guardian does not exceed RS 20,000.

Board’s Achievements

A number of schools – In Kerala, there were 12,310 schools during 1999-2000 having 6726 lower primaries (LP) schools, 2968 upper primary (UP) schools and 2580 high schools. Kerala schools possess better physical and basic facilities compared to those in the other parts of India. 83% of the schools are housed in proper buildings, 84% of Government schools have drinking water facilities and 85% have urinals/latrine facilities.

Girl Education – Kerala has achieved near-equality in school enrolment when it comes to gender. Girl students outnumber the boys at the high school stage. Girls students in schools constitute 49.1% of all students.

Primary Education – Primary Education consists of two levels that include lower primary (Std I – IV) and Upper Primary (Std V to VII). This comprises the biggest segment of the state’s education system. Almost every village has close to more than five primary schools. There are close to 6,726 lower primary and 2,968 upper primary schools. Of all the primary schools 61.07% are private aided, 2.98% are private unaided and 35.95% are government schools

Final step: Save the result that is provided

You can even check to get your result in your mobile phone by sending your registration number in the format of ‘KERALA12REGISTRATION NUMBER’ to 56263.

The result is also available on the Kerala Education Department’s Android app. ‘Saphalam’ and Kerala Public Relations Department’s PRD Live app, which can be downloaded free on Google Play.

Main Functions of the Kerala Board of Public Examinations is to:

  • Conduct the Higher Secondary School Examination
  • Grant recognition to aspiring schools
  • Define the course structure and syllabus for X+II exam.
  • Arrange for suitable facilities for teachers students
  • Make education level equivalent to the other boards.
