9 Factors That Drastically Affect Your Brain

Selfstudy

Perhaps the brain is the most mysterious organ of our body. Scientists constantly learn new facts about its work, but there still are many puzzles.

We decided to acquaint you with the most striking discoveries of the recent years in the field of neurological research, which will probably surprise you.

  • Chronic lack of sleep impairs memory

Scientists at the University of California at Berkeley have found compelling evidence that a deficiency in sleep can worsen memory and cause Alzheimer’s disease. The fact is that during sleep, brain cells remove toxic compounds that have a devastating effect on the organ. If a person does not get enough sleep chronically, these compounds have a negative effect on the brain cells.

  • Prolonged stress destroys your head

Decreased memory, ability to learn, self-control – this is what is fraught with the chronic stressful state of the body. In addition, it contributes to the fact that a person feels irritable, anxious, tense, and often distracted.

  • Love and hate have much in common

British scientists have discovered that feelings of love and hate originate in similar areas of your nerdy organ. However, unlike hatred, love significantly reduces the activity of the brain regions responsible for judiciousness and logical thinking.

  • The brain is particularly sensitive to dehydration

Our brain is almost 80% water. Therefore even a moderate loss of fluid (about 2%) already reduces the concentration of attention, vigilance, leads to worsening of short-term memory and other cognitive abilities.

  • Pregnancy changes the structure of the brain

Scientists have proved that for pregnant women, the volume of grey matter in areas of the brain is reduced, responsible for social cognition and the ability to understand other people. All this is necessary to strengthen the connection between mother and child and help a woman better understand the needs of her child and notice possible external threats.

  • The abundance of sugar in the diet worsens memory and reduces the ability to learn

A large amount of fructose in the diet slows down the brain, reduces its ability to learn and remember information, to concentrate.  This is because the excess sugar destroys neural connections of the brain.
Scientists emphasize that industrial production sugar is much more harmful (added to soft drinks, seasonings, sauces and baby food). However, products containing omega-3 fatty acids (fatty fish, nuts, fish oil) restore the consequences of the disorder.

  • Romantic love and maternal feelings are very similar

It turns out that according to the activity of your CPU, romantic relationships and maternal feelings are very similar, but there are differences as well. For example, with passionate love, the brain departments that are related to sexual arousal are activated. In addition, the feeling of anxiety and fear decreases, the feeling of euphoria increases. Mothers also activate the areas responsible for the formation of a sense of attachment.

  • Painting work improves the work of the brain

The study showed that painting classes and contemplating works of art improve the interaction between brain regions and slow its ageing. Scientists have studied the influence of art on people aged 62 to 70 years. Half of them passed a course in art history, and the other half – a course in painting. At the same time, painting classes produced a stronger result than courses in art history.
